If you want to combat common signs of aging, such as vertical lines between your eyebrows, one option is to turn to neuromodulators like Dysport and Jeuveau.

Most people know about Botox, but Dysport and Jeuveau can also offer excellent results while providing other benefits. At Aesthetic Surgery and Dermatology of Cherry Creek, we offer Botox, Dysport, and Jeuveau. Learn more about how to choose the right cosmetic treatment.

What Are Cosmetic Neuromodulators?

Cosmetic neuromodulators are injectables made from botulinum type A. This is a neurotoxin that interrupts the signals your brain sends to your muscles, not allowing them to contract.

Neuromodulators fight against the underlying cause of wrinkles and creases: facial expressions like squinting, frowning, and smiling. By temporarily paralyzing the muscles at the injection sites, they give your skin a smoother appearance.

Cosmetic neuromodulators can help with:

  • Glabellar lines (lines between eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Smile lines
  • Forehead creases

Because they train your muscles to relax, a regular regimen of cosmetic neuromodulator injections is also helpful for preventing future wrinkles.

What Is Dysport?

Dysport injections are one type of neuromodulator we offer for the treatment of glabellar lines or frown lines. It is similar in formulation to Botox, but the trace proteins vary in each option.

This injectable is best suited for people with moderate to severe glabellar lines who are in good overall health and who have realistic expectations. It may not be the right option for people who:

  • Have milk allergies
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have bleeding problems
  • Take medications for muscle spasms

We can help you find an alternative option if you are not a candidate for Dysport injections.

What Is Jeuveau?

Jeuveau is another neuromodulator that can relax the muscles that cause glabellar lines. However, Jeuveau uses a slightly different formula from Dysport. It is one of the newest forms of neurotoxin injectables that the FDA has approved.

The best candidates for Jeuveau are people who have glabellar lines and who are in overall good health. It may not be the right choice if you have muscle spasms or bleeding problems or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Dysport vs. Jeuveau

It can be tough to know which injectable is the right one for you because Dysport and Jeuveau are very similar. If your budget is a concern, Jeuveau might be the best option. It is more affordable than other neuromodulators.

Jeuveau is the only neuromodulator available that is FDA-approved solely for cosmetic purposes. On the other hand, Dysport and Botox are also used in medical settings to treat conditions like muscle spasms.

Dysport has a higher rate of diffusion, making it spread faster and allowing it to cover larger areas.

Jeuveau has quicker on-site action than both Botox and Dysport, and it tends to be one of the more potent options. This can save you time and money since you will need fewer units to get comparable results.

Preparing for Neurotoxin Injections

When you schedule a consultation with us, you will get an assessment of your treatment areas. This assessment will help us recommend the right injections. During the consultation, we will ask for your full medical history and for a list of the medications and supplements you take.

If you have gotten cosmetic procedures before, especially other neurotoxin injections, let us know what kind of experience you had. You can also ask us any questions you have about the injections. Together, we can decide on the right number of units to help you achieve your desired results.

You don’t have to do much to prepare for the injections, but we do recommend you stop drinking alcohol for at least a week before your appointment. We also suggest you stop taking blood-thinning supplements and medications, including:

  • Fish oil
  • St. John’s wort
  • Vitamin E
  • Ibuprofen
  • Aspirin

Remember to always consult with your primary care physician about stopping any medications.

You should also avoid procedures like chemical peels or facials that can make your skin more sensitive.

The Procedure and Aftercare

On the day of the injections, come to our clinic wearing no makeup, creams, lotions, or even sunscreen. We will cleanse the treatment areas before beginning the injections.

The number of units you receive will depend on many factors, including your goals and the size of the treatment areas. The procedure can take between 10 and 15 minutes; then, you can go back to your regular activities.

It is important to avoid rubbing or scratching the injection sites for a few hours so that you do not displace the solution. We also recommend you stay out of the sun for at least 24 hours and that you avoid alcohol for a day or two.

You may want to sit with your head propped up for the first night after the injections, and make sure to avoid bending over for the first three or four hours.

Jeuveau’s results can last about four months, while Dysport’s last an average of five months.
