There are many skin rejuvenation techniques available for patients seeking anti-aging treatments. However, some are more effective and efficient than others.

Skin resurfacing is a popular skin rejuvenation method that helps improve the overall tone and texture of treated skin by making it firmer.

What Is Skin Resurfacing?

“Skin resurfacing” represents a variety of procedures within the aesthetic treatment field. In general, it is a treatment type that uses either lasers, pulsed light, or photodynamic therapy to either treat skin conditions or remove the effects of aging.

At Aesthetic Surgery and Dermatology of Cherry Creek, we use radiofrequency technology for our facial resurfacing procedures.

All About Facial Resurfacing

Radiofrequency (RF) therapy is well-studied and effective at treating mild and moderate signs of aging, such as wrinkles (crow’s feet, bunny lines, glabellar lines, upper lip lips).

RF technology uses low-energy radiation to generate heat deep within the mid-layer of your skin, called the dermis.

This generated heat helps stimulate the production of new collagen in your skin, improving the appearance of wrinkles and tightening skin.

How It Works

RF therapy is relatively simple because its success lies in collagen production. Collagen is a protein present in your skin responsible for myriad functions in your body, such as wound healing. It also plays an essential role in the youthfulness of your skin.

Collagen helps skin stay firm, thick, plump, and volumized. After around age 30, your body’s natural collagen stores begin to deplete. This is when the skin starts showing signs of aging, thinning, and wrinkling.

Your body will not produce new collagen on its own without some stimulation method. RF stimulates collagen production by creating micro-damage to the dermis layer of your skin. When your body registers wounds to the skin, it responds by sending an increase in blood cells to the affected area.

These blood cells carry fibroblasts with them, generating collagen to enhance the wound healing process. RF therapy’s micro-damage is FDA approved and perfectly safe. RF energy will not affect surrounding tissues.

Facial Resurfacing for Wrinkle Treatment

Increased collagen production via skin resurfacing can help treat mild to moderate lines and wrinkles.

Wrinkles are more likely to become visible as your skin’s collagen and elastin stores deplete, causing the skin to become thinner and less elastic.

By increasing the production of new collagen at treatment areas around your face, RF therapy gradually treats the appearance of wrinkles.

Facial Resurfacing for Skin Tightening

The same collagen production concept allows skin resurfacing to create a skin tightening effect. Increased collagen helps the skin stay plump and lifted, keeping it from sagging and loosening.

How Long Does It Take to See Results?

Your results from RF therapy skin rejuvenation will not be immediate. It takes your body time to cycle through its healing process and the production of new collagen.

Generally, patients start noticing visible results after a couple of weeks, with full potency becoming visible within a few months.

Although skin resurfacing is not an immediate anti-aging option, it lasts longer than some temporary methods like dermal fillers because it’s actually working with your body to create changes from the inside out. However, this doesn’t mean skin resurfacing is a one-and-done treatment.

In order to maintain your desired results, you should get maintenance sessions every few months or so to keep up your body’s collagen stores.

Benefits of RF Skin Resurfacing

RF skin resurfacing has several benefits over other anti-aging treatments like topical anti-aging creams.

First, RF therapy can penetrate deep into the skin, activating new collagen production at a cellular level. Topical facial treatments like skin creams can only work as far as they’re absorbed into the skin. In many cases, topical treatments only reach the first layer of skin, the epidermis. Since collagen production lies in the dermis, most topical treatments are considered pretty ineffective.

Many topical treatments boast of containing collagen as an active ingredient, but again, this only goes so far. These treatments are slow to produce results (if they even have results at all). Plus, topical treatments add a limited amount of nutrients back into the skin, while RF therapy stimulates the body to create its own nutrients consistently.

RF skin resurfacing is a minimally invasive procedure that has no downtime. Unlike more invasive anti-aging procedures like surgery, you can immediately resume your lifestyle and routine following your RF therapy treatment.

Other forms of skin resurfacing include laser treatments, which are typically not accessible to every skin type. RF therapy is superior to its competition because it can be used on virtually every skin type, texture, and tone.

While tightening skin, RF therapy can also help reduce other aesthetic blemishes like scars, age spots, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

During your RF therapy appointment, you will be able to relax on a treatment bed while our providers initiate treatment to problem areas on your face.

Your appointment will last anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment site.

Following your appointment, you may notice an immediate skin tightening sensation. But you can expect to see your visible results within the following weeks and months.

Typically, we have our patients come in for multiple sessions in order to achieve their desired results. The average patient will have one session per week, with between four to eight sessions total.
