There are some people who age gracefully. Most of us, however, face a multitude of age-related changes in our appearance. A loss of volume is usually responsible for cosmetic concerns on the face and can reveal signs of aging. Hollowness around the cheeks and beneath the eyes is a common cosmetic concern associated with volume loss. At Aesthetic Surgery and Dermatology of Cherry Creek in Denver, CO, Dr. Stewart is an expert in the use of Juvederm Voluma, which can correct these issues.

What Is Juvederm Voluma Used for?

Juvederm Voluma restores volume to the midface by restoring elasticity to the skin. It does this by combining hyaluronic acid and volumizing agents. Losing facial volume can cause a person to appear older than they are. If you lose your cheek volume, you may appear gaunt and unwell. You can also develop under-eye hollows when you lose volume in the upper cheeks. Under-eye hollows give the impression that you are tired and unattentive.

The following areas of concern can be addressed by Voluma:

  • A bony chin
  • Under-eye hollows
  • The jawline
  • Tip of the nose
  • Gaunt or hollow cheeks

Voluma: How Does It Work?

Voluma, like all dermal fillers, provides instant volume beneath the skin to minimize wrinkles. But the real Voluma effect occurs about 72 hours following an injection. During the initial period, you have absorbed the product into the foundational layer of your skin. Hyaluronic acid, the primary ingredient, is quickly metabolized by the skin; but, in the meantime, as the hyaluronic acid is metabolized, collagen is being produced. Compared to hyaluronic acid (HA), collagen breaks down much slower in the skin.

Consequently, Juvederm Voluma lasts for 24 months before gradually fading away. The HA in Voluma has a higher molecular weight than other Juvederm formulas (20 mg/ml), so it should last longer than other Juvederm formulas. Moreover, the Vycross technology assures the long-term durability of the product.

Hyaluronic Acid and Its Importance

Your skin needs HA to stay healthy and beautiful. The body naturally produces this chain of sugar molecules, or polysaccharide. Maintaining the moisture barrier in your skin is one of its most important functions. It moisturizes and maintains beauty from the inside out, and it can attract water up to 1,000 times its weight.

Furthermore, hyaluronic acid boosts collagen production, which is what makes it so effective. The cycle of positive growth lasts for many years.

Other HA Products

The collagen induction and volume enhancement properties of dermal fillers made of HA are amazing. This extremely powerful acid is nevertheless crucial for your overall skin health. HA can be found in many over-the-counter skincare products, and while these cannot address the foundational layers of your skin and are much less effective for certain issues, they do have their place. To moisturize the upper layers of your skin, you should incorporate such products into your skincare routine.

In addition, topical HA may improve the texture and tone of your skin, and it may help minimize the appearance of fine lines. If you regularly use HA-based topical products in conjunction with Juvederm injections, your Juvederm results will be enhanced. During your initial consultation, let us know if you are unsure of which topical products will be best for your unique aesthetic goals. If you need help finding something, we’re more than happy to assist.

What Can I Expect During My Treatment session?

It usually takes 20-30 minutes to complete a Voluma session. If you are uncomfortable with the feeling of needles, Dr. Stewart can numb your skin with a topical anesthetic so you will not feel anything during the injection process.

You can rest assured that once the numbing cream takes effect, you won’t feel any pain or discomfort; but that’s not the only reason you’ll find the treatment comfortable. Dr. Stewart is an expert in administering this treatment and even teaches injection administration and best practices to other professionals, so every injection will be administered exactly right.

Preparation

Due to the non-invasive nature of Juvederm Voluma, few preparations are required prior to treatment. Before the scheduled appointment, you should refrain from using tobacco, alcohol, blood-thinning medications, and certain supplements.

Moreover, you should avoid products that may irritate your skin, such as those with retinoids. We will walk you through all the preparation steps in your initial consultation.

Afterward

Non-invasive treatments don’t require any downtime and hardly any recovery. It is still advisable to stay away from a few things for the first two to five days after your injections, however.

Avoid sweating, vigorous exercise, long exposure to direct sunlight, excessive heat, and hot water. A person should avoid unprotected sun exposure during the first three days following their procedure, since it may affect the way the injectable system settles.

Results To Expect

Juvederm provides immediate results, as noted above. You should keep in mind, however, that these initial results will only last for a short time, as the filler beneath the skin only gives you temporary lifting results. The real results come a bit later; in fact, you may notice as the gel spreads and settles that it initially seems to deflate a bit. Don’t worry.

It may take approximately one or two weeks for the full effects of your injection to manifest. Your skin’s collagen production continuously increases during this period, and this provides durable and long-lasting results.

Results: How Durable Are They?

Again, results will last for about 24 months. It is possible, however, that good skin care could extend the life of your final results. The long-lasting results of Voluma make it ideal for treating cosmetic concerns that require the most extreme treatment. The dermal filler’s seamless, natural results make it an extremely popular choice when treating midface enhancement.

Because collagen production decreases as we age, younger people are more likely to enjoy longer-lasting results. In addition, because collagen plays a big part in the results of this treatment, younger people don’t have to concern themselves as much with their skincare regimen to keep their results for as long as possible. In order for their ideal results to last, older people need to be much more conscious of their lifestyle choices.

What Is the Recommended Frequency of Injections?

You will likely need to have maintenance sessions every 24 months or so. First touchups are best scheduled two years after your initial treatment, because the final results may take some time to show. During your initial consultation, after we have evaluated your skin’s health and discussed your lifestyle choices, we will advise you on how frequently you should schedule touch-up appointments.

About Juvederm

Juvederm offers many different formulas, including Voluma. In addition to being FDA-approved, Juvederm’s hyaluronic acid-based fillers have been carefully formulated to deliver flawless, long-lasting results in a variety of facial areas. Here are some other Juvederm formulas that are popular:

Vollure

Vollure features a smaller and softer formulation than Voluma, which has 20mg/ml of HA. Vollure contains 17.5mg HA per milliliter, and it is also used to alter the midface and lower face. In particular, it can be applied to nasolabial folds, sagging chin skin, and around the eyes. It is also suitable for more precise corrections to cosmetic problems.

Volbella

Volumella’s texture is also distinctive. Lipstick lines, smile lines, and marionette lines are common concerns around the mouth that can be filled with this product. In addition, Volbella can assist in correcting asymmetry in lips and increasing the size of the lips.

Can This Treatment Be Used Along With Other Anti-Aging Treatments?

Voluma is an excellent anti-aging treatment that can complement other treatments. Juvederm Voluma is often used in combination with other Juvederm formulas. As an anti-aging treatment, this injectable can also be safely and effectively combined with other products that may offer similar benefits, like Botox and Dysport.

The muscle relaxants Botox and Dysport are generally injected into the higher part of the face in order to reduce the appearance of active wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Your initial consultation can help us determine whether or not you are a good candidate for Juvederm Voluma. In general, if you have reached the age of 21 and you are in relatively good health, there is an excellent chance you will be eligible for this treatment.
